Participatory Democracy, Democratic Education, and Women

Abstract Participatory democrats argue that citizen engagement at the local level serves an important educational function. Through involvement in participatory mechanisms, citizens develop various skills, become better informed, and cultivate a greater sense of political efficacy. There has been considerable debate academic literature over extent to which participation can produce these benefits, but deliberative theoretical approaches have criticised for neglecting power dynamics within mechanisms themselves, overlooking structural inequalities between women men. Numerous critics charged tend mask, not eliminate, gender inequalities, particularly societies where remain firmly entrenched. While theory on function democracy is well developed, there remains lack empirical work impact Latin America, region forefront democratic innovation. Based extensive fieldwork Venezuela, Ecuador Chile, this article identifies types skills gain through participation, questions reproduce traditional roles.
